Mevaldi
Bio-Based Building Blocks
Mevaldi is producing biochemicals for new bio-polymers, polyols, and recyclable polyurethanes and polyesters.
Mevaldi’s Bio-Based Building Blocks are used in a broad range of applications, e.g., polyesters for clothing and polyurethanes for coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers.

Use Cases
Elastane is popular in clothing for its great stretch, allowing garments to fit snugly and maintain their shape. It’s especially useful for activewear, underwear, and swimwear.
However, its complex chemical structure makes recycling challenging, with only 1% of elastane clothing being recycled globally. The high demand for textiles leads to significant waste and pollution, increasing our ecological footprint.
Mevaldi is tackling this issue by creating BioElast, a biobased polyester that serves as a sustainable alternative to elastane. This innovative material, similar in structure to elastane, enables recycling and can greatly enhance sustainability in the fashion industry.
With BioElast, Mevaldi is making significant progress towards achieving full clothing recycling.
The production and use of fossil-based plastic materials has a negative impact on our planet. However, these materials are currently essential for many applications, like foam materials used in shoe soles or construction materials. These products are typically made of polyurethanes (PU).
PU is used in many everyday products for its elasticity and abrasion resistance (scratch-proof). But in the production of PU isocyanate is used, which poses major environmental and health risks, and its recycling is almost not possible, so the products are ultimately burned or end up in nature. With our partners, we focus on making Non-Isocyanate PUs (NIPU) using natural materials and make them easier to recycle.
In NEXT-STEP, the consortium is demonstrating the use of Nuvone and Pentonext as a platform chemicals to be used in footware and insulation applications.
